"Saptapadi" literally means "seven steps" — the ceremony in which the bride and groom jointly take seven steps around the sacred fire. Under Section 7(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, where a couple's customary rites include Saptapadi, their marriage becomes legally complete and binding at the moment the seventh step is taken.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE
A couple completes six steps around the fire but the ceremony is interrupted before the seventh. Under Section 7(2), their marriage is not yet legally complete, because the deeming rule attaches specifically to the seventh step, not to the ceremony generally.
WHERE YOU'LL COME ACROSS THIS
Any problem question about when a Hindu marriage "becomes complete" expects a precise answer — "at the seventh step of Saptapadi," not just "when the ceremony is performed."
COMMON MIX-UP
Students often assume Saptapadi is compulsory for every Hindu marriage. It is only decisive where it is actually part of the couple's own customary rites — Section 7(1) defers to whatever ceremonies the parties' custom requires, and not every community includes Saptapadi.
