Union of States (రాష్ట్రాల యూనియన్)

The specific term used in Article 1(1) of the Constitution to describe India's formal name — chosen deliberately over "Federation of States" to reflect that India was not formed by an agreement among previously independent States, and that no State has the right to secede from it.

Real-life example

When Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, creating Telangana, no State's individual consent was required — only its Legislature's views — precisely because India is a Union of States, not a voluntary federation of independent ones.

Common mix-up

Not to be confused with "Federation" — India functions as a federation in its structure, but is legally and officially named a "Union of States," a distinction Dr. B.R. Ambedkar explained deliberately.
