Mediation (Consumer Protection Act) —

A voluntary, statutory alternative to a full contested hearing, under which a Commission-empanelled mediator helps both parties negotiate a settlement, requiring the consent of both sides.

Real-life example

A retailer and a customer agree a washing machine had a minor defect but disagree only on the refund amount. The Commission refers the dispute to its mediation cell, and a mediator helps them agree on a specific figure within days.

Where you'll come across this

The subject of Unit 5, Post 11 in full — the mediation cells attached to each Commission, and the seven-day timeline for recording a settlement.

Common mix-up

Mediation is never compulsory — if either party does not consent, or if mediation fails to produce a settlement, the party retains the full right to have the Commission adjudicate the dispute in the ordinary way.
