Doctrine of Blending —

The doctrine of blending lets a coparcener voluntarily abandon their separate claim to self-acquired property by deliberately "throwing it into" the joint family's common stock. Per Mallesappa Bandeppa Desai v. Desai Mallappa (1961), it requires a coparcener with clear, provable intent — and cannot be used by a female member holding only a limited estate.

Real-life example

A coparcener who owns a personal plot of land can make a clear declaration that they're merging it into the family stock — from then on, all coparceners have a birthright share in it, just like in ancestral property.

Common mix-up

Merely keeping personal property alongside family property, or letting the family use it, is not enough — blending requires clear, positive proof of intent to give up the separate claim entirely.
