Coercion is committing, or threatening to commit, an act forbidden by criminal law — or unlawfully detaining, or threatening to detain, someone's property — specifically to force a person into entering an agreement. It's the most direct of the five ways consent can be less than free: no manipulation, no misleading statement, just an unlawful threat used to extract a "yes."
A man threatens to commit suicide unless his wife signs over her share in a property to his brother. She signs out of fear for his life. Even though no physical force was used against her directly, Indian courts have held this counts as coercion — the threat itself was of an act the law treats as criminal, and it was made specifically to obtain her signature.
Coercion comes up constantly in problem questions involving family property disputes, forced releases, or debt recovery under duress — and in Chikham Amiraju v. Chikham Seshamma, the leading case for threat-of-suicide-as-coercion.
Students often confuse coercion with undue influence because both involve pressure. The real difference: coercion needs an unlawful act or threat and can come from a total stranger to the contract; undue influence needs no unlawful act at all, only a pre-existing relationship where one party can dominate the other's will.
